As a photographer, it is my job to create a picture that speaks to my clients and the people who view my work. The work I create should evoke emotion and make my clients happy. I am to see the venues and create a picture in my head and produce that on camera.

Every photographer wants to come up with creative and unique pictures, especially at locations that are used a lot. The last thing you want is to have pictures that everyone else has done. My job is to not only take pictures at the obviously pretty places, but to also take something that wouldn’t look like a good picture and blow my clients away.

I swear that Catherine and Muraya thought I was crazy this weekend when I had them trudge through the grass to this spot. If you look at the pictures below, you can see the left picture is the view of the location as I walked up. There’s nothing really special about this spot. There’s nothing special about the tree. In fact, it’s kind of ugly. The grass is overgrown, no pretty flowers or vines; there isn’t really a whole lot going on in this location.

BUT it’s all about perspective. Walking up to this spot, I knew exactly what I had envisioned in my head for this picture. It’s times like this I wish I had Ben with me at an engagement session so that he could get some behind-the-scenes shots of me in action. You would just laugh at me sometimes with the positions I get into to to get a picture. Instead of staying at their level, I got down on the ground on my stomach and laid in the grass. I placed my camera behind the little yellow flowers you see in the picture on the left. They don’t look all that special… but position them in front of my lens and play with the foreground focus and you have these amazing yellow flowers that add this wonderful pop to this picture. It’s all about perspective. With the position I’m in, you lose all of that shrubbery at the bottom of the tree, because I positioned them in such a way that it hides it. It’s all about perspective. That overgrown grass that looked ugly when we first walked up now adds some depth and some great height around their feet. It’s all about perspective.

So there you have it. If you’re a photographer, I challenge you to take a new spin on a location or spot at a venue and create something that makes your clients think “why is she taking us here” and then take their breath away once they see the results.
