Primrose Cottage | Roswell, GA | August 25, 2017

Mayra’s smile is simply contagious. I still remember meeting her at the Georgia Bridal Show back in January. I loved talking to her and immediately knew we would be working together. She reached out to me a day or two later to tell me more about her special day(s) planned with Phil. See, Mayra and Phil were going to have a small private ceremony in Decatur and then a larger formal ceremony at Primrose Cottage this past weekend. Their elopement ceremony was on Valentines Day of this year, so in lieu of an engagement session, I went and took pictures for them at their ceremony. I enjoyed getting to be there for their first special day. I got to meet their family that were there and see them again this past weekend! I really liked getting to do that!

The day was filled with so much laughter! I cannot tell you how much I laughed and smiled with the couple and the wedding party throughout the day. I got made fun of a handful of times for accidentally calling Nelly (Mayra’s sister) Natalie, and calling Danny, Daniel- but to my defense, that’s his legal name and someone else called him that and I heard it and Natalie kind of sounds like Nelly. I try to memorize the names of the wedding party before I go so that I can use names vs “hey so and so” and I did the same for Mayra and Phil’s wedding. I just wasn’t on my A Game on Friday and messed up once. They didn’t let me forget it the rest of the day! Haha! I love a wedding party that can play and tease, because I have so much more fun with them. They dish, I can take it; as long as they can take it back! 😉

I loved all of the little traditions incorporated in their day! Mayra is from Mexico, and there are some really cool Mexican traditions that they included for their ceremony. One was the wedding lasso rosary (Lazo) – it’s a large rosary placed around the bride and groom as a symbol of unity. The use of rosary beads reflects that God forever binds the bride and groom together in unity. They also had something called arras. These are blessed wedding coins that are used during the ceremony. The groom gives the coins to his new wife as he pledges to care for her and the home they will build together. The bride receives the coins and commits herself to working with her new husband to use the gifts they have to care for all in need. Phil has some German heritage, so they included a cool toasting cup for the couple to share. They also had their cake cutting pieces which were engraved and given by the parents of the groom. It’s a family tradition from Phil’s family. Every couple that gets married in the family has their wedding date engraved into their cake cutters.

I think one of the coolest parts of the day was the mariachi band that Mayra’s Dad brought to the wedding! In all of my years of shooting weddings, I have never had a mariachi band! It was such a cool and fun touch of their heritage to the day. Mayra and her Dad’s dance together was to the band singing. I loved it!

This is my third time shooting at Primrose Cottage this year (with one more to come in December) and I love how each wedding can look so different. In fact, each wedding has had their ceremony at a different location each time. So if you look back to Katharine and Brad’s and Allison and Shawn’s weddings there earlier this year, you would notice significantly different looks for each wedding and different ceremony spots. I love it!

Thanks Mayra and Phil for having Ben and me a part of your special day. We were so blessed to be a part of it and have such a fun time with y’all. See you two in another six months for our “next wedding” ceremony!

Letters from Phil’s parents to the couple throughout their engagement process. Pictured with it is the toasting cup.  The arras with their rings. I loved the container that held the arras. Ben took this awesome shot through the lighted mirror used by the makeup artist!  Laughter and smiles with Mama with getting dressed!  First Look time! Phil originally didn’t want to do one, but he told me before the ceremony how glad he was that I told him about it and how great it would be. I always love hearing this from my couples!  I love all of the beautiful flowers and the garden space at Primrose Cottage Y’all, I am obsessed with the back of her dress!  Swoon! Always love a good veil toss!  I literally jumped up and down when I saw this shot. I love it! I was under the veil with them to get this shot. Gorgeous wedding party in front of Primrose Cottage  Dad’s turn for a First Look!  Lots of laughter and smiles during their ceremony Wedding rosary: both mom’s came up and wrapped it around the couple  “Shots shots shots shots shots shots
Shots shots shots shots shots
Shots shots shots shots shots”  The mariachi band! I LOVE IT!  Lots of emotions with Phil and his Mom’s first dance.  And lots of laughter as well!  Phil cracked everyone up during the cake cutting. First he decided to check his hair in the reflection of the knife.  Then, instead of feeding cake to Mayra, he took not one, not two, but three bites for himself before he decided to share with her! And what groom doesn’t do clapping pushups at his reception?  And then Phil’s brother-in-law (and best man) got Mayra a USA Soccer jersey with her new last name on it. Not only does Mike work for USA Soccer, but her family are big fans of the Mexican national team. I think she died inside slightly as Mike gave this to her. There might have been some boos and jeers when Mike gave this to Mayra! Hey Daniel! I mean, Danny!  Goodnight kiss before heading out!

STUNNING!! I love so many of the details you captured from the band to the shots through the makeup light, and more! I make the same name efforts – to memorize – and recently slipped up with a one-syllable name. Bob/Joe/Tom/Sam… so embarrassing!! Beautiful wedding work.
